STAGE 6 · LESSON 2 OF 5

How to evaluate a futures broker

A low advertised commission is only one part of the decision.

THE IDEA~8–12 MINUTES

Understand it

Confirm the firm and relevant individuals through official regulator resources; understand the account agreement, required deposits, margins, commissions, routing fees, data costs, platform support, liquidation policies and customer service. Compare actual all-in costs for your intended contract and typical holding period. Review what happens during disruptions and what protections do and do not apply. Do not assume a broker is appropriate merely because it appears on a recommendation page.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A broker with lower per-side commissions may have higher platform or market-data charges. A trader making two trades a week has different cost sensitivities from someone placing fifty trades per day.

Watch for this misconception

Treating affiliate rankings as neutral evidence or assuming exchange listing alone proves a broker's service quality.

PRACTICE EXERCISE

Write a comparison checklist using official broker fee documents, regulator registration and platform requirements.
