STAGE 5 · LESSON 5 OF 5

Measuring adherence instead of motivation

Process adherence can be observed and improved more reliably than willpower.

THE IDEA~8–12 MINUTES

Understand it

Define specific violations: an entry outside session hours, position size above the limit, skipped stop placement, unauthorized strategy change, or an unplanned additional trade. Review the frequency and context of each violation without making moral judgments. Consider whether a rule is unrealistic or whether the environment needs stronger controls. Keep strategy performance metrics separate from compliance metrics.

WORKED EXAMPLE

If 18 of 20 trades matched your written entries, your observed entry-rule adherence was 90% in that sample. That number does not establish whether the strategy itself has an edge.

Watch for this misconception

Equating a high adherence percentage with guaranteed profits, or treating a small sample as a stable trait.

PRACTICE EXERCISE

Pick one measurable behavior and write how you'll observe it for the next 20 simulated decisions.
