STAGE 4 · LESSON 1 OF 5

What counts as a trading edge?

A strategy is a testable claim about outcomes, not a pattern that looks convincing.

THE IDEA~8–12 MINUTES

Understand it

An edge, if one exists, is a repeatable advantage after realistic transaction costs and risk. Claims of an edge need a market, instrument, data timeframe, entry/exit rules, risk rules, outcome measures and evidence. Historical profitability is necessary to examine but not sufficient to predict the future. Be skeptical of stories that cannot be disproven by a predefined test.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A hypothesis says: 'During a specified session, a rule-based pullback following a measured trend has positive net expectancy after assumed costs.' This is testable. 'Buy when the chart looks strong' is not.

Watch for this misconception

Changing entry definitions after losing tests until historical returns look attractive without documenting revisions.

PRACTICE EXERCISE

Turn a favorite chart setup into one falsifiable sentence with specified market, session, entry and exit.
