STAGE 2 · LESSON 5 OF 5

Sessions, events and trading context

Calendar events and liquidity cycles can overwhelm otherwise neat chart patterns.

THE IDEA~8–12 MINUTES

Understand it

Equity index futures trade across extended hours, but participation is not uniform. Major scheduled economic releases and market openings can change spreads and volatility quickly. Exchange calendars, contract expiration dates, and market holidays matter too. A trading plan should declare when its rules apply and when trading is prohibited. A plan with no-event windows is often easier to evaluate honestly.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A strategy tested only during regular U.S. trading hours should not be assumed to perform similarly overnight. Execution and participant mix may be different.

Watch for this misconception

Building a rule using future news data that was not available at decision time, a form of look-ahead bias.

PRACTICE EXERCISE

Choose a scheduled release and list the questions you would research before testing a rule around it.
